The most profitable contractors are specialty contractors. Because they are doing similar project over and over, they develop staff, processes, and efficiencies that are best suited to their specialty.
Many contractors take whatever projects come to them, instead of creating a specialty that allows them to create and take advantage of efficiencies.
To become a more profitable contractor, one must determine what they are best at, or most interested in. Then, they can staff for that type of project, shop and determine the best subcontractors for that type of project and develop relationships with them, and develop systems and processes that create efficiencies for that type of project.
